What is a proboscis anyway? A proboscis [pro-bos-kis] is the name for the straw-like structure that butterflies and some moths use to drink. The proboscis is kept coiled at the front of the head when it's not being used. If you watch closely when a butterfly lands on a flower, you will see it probe around with this structure, seeking the nectar from the flower. |

In the picture below, you can see the proboscis of the newly emerged butterfly. It is split into two parts, like a straw that has been cut down the middle. As soon as the butterfly comes out of its chrysalis, it begins to work these two pieces together. It must do this successfully in order to be able to survive.
