The list below is by no means complete, but it will give you a good idea of some of the host plants for common North American butterflies.  Though it may sound unusual, the same species of butterfly may have different taste preferences in one region than in another. You might want to check with a local agriculture department, master gardener, or extension service to see what tastes your local butterflies have. 

American Painted Lady - daisy family, everlasting

Anise Swallowtail - citrus plant, parsley, fennel, dill, rue

Baltimore - turtlehead, plantain

Banded Hairstreak - oak

Black swallowtail - parsley, carrots, dill, fennel, rue, Queen Anne's lace

Buckeye - plantain, snapdragon

Cabbage White - cabbage, wintercress

California Sister - oak

Clouded Sulphur - alfalfa, clover

Comma - hops, nettle, elm

Field Crescent - aster

Giant Swallowtail - citrus plant, rue, ash

Great Spangled Fritillary - violets

Gulf Fritillary - passionflower

Milbert's Tortoiseshell - nettles

Monarch - milkweed

Mourning Cloak - willow, elm, aspen, hackberry

Orange Sulfur - alfalfa, clover

Painted Ladies - thistle, hollyhock, mallow

Pearl Crescent - aster

Queen - milkweed

Question Mark - elm, hackberry, hops

Red Admiral - nettle, hops

Red-Spotted Purple - willow, poplar, wild cherry

Spicebush Swallowtail - sassafras, spicebush

Spring Azure - dogwood, blueberry, cherry

Tiger Swallowtail, eastern - lilac, cherry, tulip poplar

Tiger Swallowtail, western - poplar, willow

Variegated Fritillary - passionflower, violet

Viceroy - willow, poplar

West Coast Lady - mallow

White Admiral - birch, willow, poplar

Zebra Longwing - passionflower

Zebra Swallowtail - pawpaw
