Milkweed Seed Sampler

Plant milkweed seeds to keep butterflies visiting!
Milkweed plants, members of the Asclepias family, are the
only host plant for the monarch and queen butterflies. The adult females
seek out these plants on which they lay their eggs. The caterpillars
that hatch will remain on the plants and eat the leaves until they enter
the pupal stage, then emerge as adult butterflies. Watch every stage of
the butterfly life cycle in your garden.
Many species of butterflies visit milkweed plants in bloom, attracted by
their nectar. Help provide habitats for the monarch and other
butterflies by planting milkweed!
Sampler includes four types of milkweed seed, in individual packages. We purchase all of our
milkweed seeds on a regular basis from reputable suppliers. Seed
should be viable for a year after purchase if stored in cool, dry
location.
Seeds can be either planted directly into the garden or started
early indoors. Sampler includes approximately 40+ seeds of each variety.
All four species are hardy perennials that
need a period of cold treatment (instructions included on package) before
planting.
As with any perennial, the best display is in
the second year and after. Perennial plants are usually small the
first year they are started from seed, and though some will bloom if begun
early in the season, they will bloom more abundantly in following years.
Native milkweed plants are very hardy once established. Because of
their long taproot, they can be difficult to transplant from one area of
the garden to another.
Instructions are included on each
package.
Clockwise from top left:
- Asclepias syriaca, 'Common Milkweed', a native of North
America, hardy perennial, grows to 3-4', mauve/purple blooms with a
wonderful fragrance. This milkweed produces very large, oval leaves.
- Asclepias tuberosa, 'Butterfly
Weed', a bright orange flowered milkweed. Grows to about 3', and is also a
fast grower, native hardy perennial.
Leaves on this plant are more narrow and slender, and are fuzzy. Pinching back
new growth early in the season will produce a more bushy form.
- Asclepias speciosa, 'Showy Milkweed', a native
hardy perennial
milkweed which grows to about 3-4', produces large oval leaves.
- Asclepias incarnata, 'Swamp Milkweed', a native North
American hardy perennial. Grows to 3-4', rosy red blooms, may bloom
the first year from seed if started very early indoors
before transplanting to the garden after danger of frost is past. Leaves are
slender and narrow.
